What is the New Extension?
Previously, the scheme was extended periodically for 3 or 6 months. However, the Cabinet decided to merge PMGKAY with the National Food Security Act (NFSA) schemes and extended the free ration benefit for a significantly longer period of 5 years.
This ensures food security for the poor and prevents any financial burden regarding food grains until the end of 2028.
Eligibility Criteria (Who Gets Free Ration?)
Not everyone is eligible for this scheme. You must fall under one of the following categories and possess a valid Ration Card linked with Aadhaar:
- ✅ Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY): The poorest of the poor families. They receive 35 KG of food grains per family per month.
- ✅ Priority Households (PHH): Families identified by state governments. They receive 5 KG of food grains per person per month.
